Dat Man Marcel III

Hi, folks. I must apolgize not to have posted this tasty compilation any sooner. Anyway, Jasonicus did one more mixed goodie bag for us some weeks ago - it just got stuck in my computer for a bit longer.

No real harm done though as this is timeless stuff and will always sound fresh and contemporary. In this bag we find two utterly sick tracks from Dettman. Heavy base, laden with complex, pulsating white noice and demonic depth that sets these tunes perfectly for it’s home arena - Berghain. Dat Man just keeps on refining and destilling the essence of techno to a completely new level.

A.r.t.less has not been around more than a few years but still already managed to plant it self as a sure guarantee for quality berlin/detroit/techno/house. Tob Jona is the latest release and it is as good and deep as the preceding releases. While on the super hot Detroit-Berlin thing that is going on one whom must be mentioned is Redshape. This masked fella really capture the essence of these two styles - the deep, driving end from Detroit and to the reduced, dubscapes of Berlin. Plonk here is his latest release and is also found in the last Berghain Mix by Dettman.

I really thought Matthew Dear would take a well deserved time out after his relentless releases and touring under different monikers last year. But no, instead he comes out with another brilliant, barmy Audion tune. Yes, it as wierd and hypnotizing as usual. Minimal drumpatterns trips away and on top of this is a droning, easter flute that keeps buzzing in your ear. Nasty, but ohh so good.

So enjoy and Salute, Marcel.

minimal summer outlet

You know what else goes well in summer? Minimal. Thats right; glitchy, droning, subtile gestures is all that’s really needed when the blossoms bloom. So this weeks mix is all sortay minimaal but ranges from trippy and edgy dubstep infused techno like Scuba to poppy, happy slappy minimal tech like Sammy Dee.

From the fruitful blend of techno and dubstep we see Shackleton this time remixing Villalobos. Minimoonstar is from Ricardo’s highly anticipated new EP Vasco [Perlon]. Shackleton takes the orignals trippy, minimal structure and reconstructs it with his signature bass and percussive pattern, adding depth and presence. Killer tune! Another artist really worth checking out is dutchman Dave Huisman under his 2562 moniker. Forward thinking, experimental dubstep with a clear nodge to Rhythm& Sound and dub techno. He’s just out with a full album on Tectonic which surely be regarded as a monomental dubstep release - so don’t waste time getting it.

More straight minimal comes from Jens Zimmerman whom Ricardo often lists as one of his optimal club producers. No wonder as Jens productions uses heavy bassline modulations and experitmental percussive patterns but still very captivating and club oriented. Layo and Bushwacka presents a summery minimal tune based on crisp techno bassline and an array of sound samples, glitches and whatnot. This here is the ‘deep’ version which has a somewhat deeper tone but still ripe for the summer parties.

Also in the bag are some modern minimal classics. Hieroglyphic Being with Kilometer Zero from last year offers energitic, throbbing beats that are constatly trying to escape and collapse. It’s all tightly constrained and the beats offers no escape route than forward. Remote - Out from Medea Glub should rightly also be considered a classic. The release was on heavy rotation last year from Hawtin and Ricardo. Even though Out wasn’t the main attraction on the release it is a track not to be missed. Moody, wierd harmonics and beats that drives the whole and makes for a good spice in the mix.

Now I need to pack. Berlin is waiting.

Sunkissed

Fugu

It’s been a while for a proper post but I been off to Tokyo for vacation and just moved to a new house (and to be honest the weather has just been too good to sit inside bloggin). Anyway, summer is here and with it comes ecstatic summer parties. This inspired this post and it will act as a prelude for next weekend in Berlin. Sasha Dive and Sebo K are playing at Pano - my my it’s going to be no sleep for the wicked…

So, let’s see what’s on offer this time. First off is french duo Noze with Bug. This is happy dance music for the streets if you ever heard it. The track is off their new album Songs on the Rock which could well be one of the best albums this year. Album style ranges from cabaret house, pop, to minimaal glitch with Waitsesqeue whiskey drenched vocals. Simply geniously made - just get the album.  Next up is two tracks from Lemos (and Kreon). Minimal and organic techno and similar to Noze they often blend live instruments in the mix. Lyli’Shere is here remixed by favorite Anthony Collins. Brilliant drunken remix that starts off a bit slow and mellow with hypnotic horns, pianos and a sloppy beat which builds up to a cacaphonic climax. A sureshot for the wee morning hours.

Italoboyz are still staying in their jazzy style with their new release Bahia. It’s a good followup from last years summer hit Victor Casanova. The track is based on a cut and paste jazzy horn sample from Coltrane. Yes, the jazz sampling is tacky and the peaks are overstretched and overused to say the least, but Italoboyz still manage do it with big sense of humour and it’s sure to be a laugh in the clubs this summer. Next up is some right afro drumscapades from Sven UK& Andomat and Mihalis Safras. Interafrica is an energetic house tune layerd with some arabic flutes. Where it has a tone of northern africa - O Moresi is bang in the middle. Andomat continues to excel in them funky, playful beats just bouncing away.

The mix swings on with a groovy ecstatic party tune from Johnny D - Riddim Mood. The track is from his much acclaimed release Orbitalife [Oslo] and it’s gentle chord keeps you hypnotized wanting more all through. Next one is a bit of a joker in the mix Harry Axt with Riffler. This is a brilliant sunshine raver. Surprisingly I never had the oppertunity to hear it played at any party. Sad really as it has a fantastic drive and keeps mutating all trough but never being to bombastic. It was release last year on Rompecabeza so I’ll keep my fingers crossed for this summer.

Last in the bag this time is Junior Boys - No kind of man (Jona Remix). First released in their mix on Body Language series and now it’s been released on Get Physical and includes this brilliant remix by Jona. Still in keeping with the electro pop appearance of the original, Jona has cut the vocal into bits and stepped up the tempo in to a housy summer cocktail. Canadiancooler -tasty.

Dat man marcel too

Here is another massive post with steaming fresh rips from Jasonicus. This collection is packed with straight top notch dance stuff. It includes fantastic new releases from ever brilliant FHXE, OstgutTon and Mojuba. In the mix is also classy stuff from herr Klock from his own label Klockworks. Personal pick gotta be Error Error - Back to Lythian, which is an atmospheric thumper of the finest sort. Massive bass line with bubbling white noice and scrambled melodies in the back. Last but not least two fantastic remixes from Marcel& Marcel. Both bear the hallmark of purist techno quality which guarantees serious head nodding or rumpshaking or both. I guess Jasonicus named the mix as tribute to either one of them Marcels.

Enjoy!

Muscle Man Stomp III

We’re back with another Muscle Man Stomp mix for all you conneseurs of finer techno of the harder kind. So strap up and enjoy this compilation. Please comment if you like it.

First up is absolute jawdropping release from new white label EQD (Equalized). The artist is unknow, but it carries the hallmark of the finer techno productions typically found from the notirious Berlin/Hardwax crew. Side 1 has geniously built 3-beat, alternating bass and percussion pattern which which makes this brilliant to mix in as it seems to constatly change and propel the tune. I guess that’s why it’s found in so many mixes lately. The flip offers a deeper and bit moodier swing and is less of a ‘tool’ than the other side. The vinyl only has a limited release and no digital in sight so enjoy this fresh rip from us.

Continuing with some harder stuff - Kalon from Sandwell District label and James Ruskin from Tresor. Both on display here with hard drum escapdes infused with bass, bass and more bass. For anyone into T++ and hard rumbling techno - this is as good as it gets.

Also in the mix is Dettman’s - Let’s do it. I think this is his first release on his own label MDR. I dunno how I ever missed this masterly done track before. Mr Dettman is soon releasing the next Berghain Mix http://www.residentadvisor.net/news.aspx?id=9228 - be sure not to miss that one.

It seems like the Dutch have really adopted the detriot style and are putting out a lot this way recently. Techno maestro Joris just keeps on coming out with new and good quality stuff. In the mix her with Blank, remixed by Deetron. Deep and rumbling as it should be nowadays. The dutch duo - Dimi Angélis & Jeroen Search is new to me but have been around for some time. Their track Jupiter is centered around a relentless groove with some abstract melodies way in the background. The track’s complex soundpattern shifts all trough which makes it really captivating. Same with countryman Parallel 9 (Steve Rachmad) with Technic. He also manages to capture the essence of techno, his take might be more of a reductionist take but never the less hard and ever shifting variations.

Next up some peaktime stompers from Rune& Jerome Sydenham. Elephant is has an effective build up based around a piano chord. It’s on the verge of getting a over the top but who cares at peak time ehh. Can’t Stop Not is harder still and is also a sure peaktime shot, but unlike Elephant the peak is more controlled and damped. Nice fog horn breaks through the rumble occasionally. Nice.

Last in the mix is an older track by Green Velvet (Cajmere) which offers heavy beats, acid loops and some barmy voice samples- “I could be Tarzan - Lord of the Jungle OAAAAOOW!”. Fun and dancy to.

dat man marcel

Lucky us, Jasonicus has dropped another superb set of fresh rips. The mix includes some well and lesser known artist but all tilted slightly to the dubbier side of techno. First up is top notch release from Pacou, here remixed by no others than Modell and Huckaby. Followed by a yet another good release from Andy Stott

Freund der Familie is one those rare subliminal technoids bordering to dub step. It sits perfectly here in this mix together with Stott and Modell and it’s no surprise wunderkid Weisemann got his hands on this too. Also in the mix we find Silent Servant - The Blood of our King, a new release from the faultless label Sandwell District who brought us the absolute stunning CH-Signal Laboratories and Kalon. Silent Servant offers a straight hard drum escapade of pure dub techno bliss. It just don’t get much better than this.

Jasonic is putting together some more comps to be published soon - so stay tuned.

bag o’dub

Here is a little goodie bag for the weekend, a bag full of new and fresh dub techno. This subgenre has really exploded again and we’ve seen some fantastic releases just over the last few months. It’s nice to finally see this genre getting a boost again and not staying an exclusive club for BC/CR and their ilks. The mix got quite a variation of dub techno. On one side you see Bvdub who has developed a brilliant atmospheric and lush soundscape with some raving TB303 loops woven into the fabric. On the other side you’ll find the likes of MLZ and Leftover going with more heavy battery and echo effects.  Similar with Marko Furstenberg and Atheus. All are fantastic producers who’s found the perfect balance in the lush dub soundscape and hard, droning techno. Also in the mix is a more dubby side of M.Dettman than most know him. Here with a remix from last year and Places like this from his Scenario EP.

There will be more dub techno coming this way soon. Let me know if you have any recommendations or requests.

Sweatshop II

arctic2

It’s been a while for a proper mix here at Discfunctional. I have been busy trying to catch the elusive yet tasty Arctic Char and buying a house. Anyway, the stack of tunes has been fillin up so there will be more post soon.

This mix kicks off with Detriot finest Omar-S with Open Mist. It’s unclear to me where/when it’s been released originally but I gto this one was off a De:Bug compilation about a year ago and it’s a right tune, really showing his talent for production of modern house music. Followed by a straighter tunes from Kerri Chandler and  Kelli Hand.  Next is bumping and driving Activist by Dj Bone. Brilliant drive and groovy music at it’s best. Track is from his album Out Of Knowhere from last year (Find full review here).

Another hidden gem is Gene Hunt. Here with two absolute killer house stompers from his earlier years. Gene Hunt’s been true pioneer in the Chicago house scene and has collaborated with a wide range of top DJs. He’s just out with a new EP together with Robert Owens (Gene Hunt Feat. Robert Owens-Twilite People).

Dinnay plan to only dig out oldies so here is some newer tunes. First up is a latest release from the ever brilliant Ostgut Tontränger, Southbound by MyMy. A melodic and beutiful tune and as with all Ostgut releases it has a soundscape that is designed to work wonders on the inhouse Berghain/Panorama club. On a similar note but a slight bit whackier is Tim Woestenenk - Sunset Love. It is a minimal affair with fairly simple beat and some soft keys and bent vocoder voice samples on top. Gutes-gutes minimaal.

Watamu Beach the latest from Sebbo (aka Sebastian Suckfüll) has been on constant repeat for the last weeks. It has all the elements for making this is going to be a long runner on the dancefloor this spring - mellow dub techo tune with brilliant footie like chanting. It is the third release on Martin Buttrich and Loco Dice’s Desolat label. As a bonus the release includes a rework by Basic Channel/Maurizio legend, Moritz von Oswald.

Next up is Luke Hess - Believe and Receive, deepanddubbydub remix by Shed. The barmy name aside it does explain the outlines of this remix - it is deeper and dubbier than the original. This is happy dub techno with a wicked intent.

Last up is all time favorite Soundstream - Love Jam. It was released 2006 but still fresh and probably the best dance tune in years. It’s disco, it’s funk and it’s got the best stabbin intro ever made. Sure moder classic and essential in your music weaponry array.

Update:

Sorry I didn’t mean to be cheeky to leave out Moritz von Oswald remix of Watamu Beach. To be honest it’s not best thing he’s come up with. It’s not bad but it’s a little to watered down. Sebbo’s version even sound more like Basic Channel than Moritz himself. In fact Sebbos plays like a hommage to q1.2 which makes this the remix of the remix… err nevermind, here it is.

Game One

After some digging and scoping around, I finally managed to find these precious gems. We’re back in mid 90’s when Juan Atkins& Orlando Voorn sat in Amsterdam and produced Game One under the name Infiniti. Juan is one of Detriots most influential producers and has an impressive back catalogue under several aliases including Cybotron and Model 500. Orlando has an equally impressive footprint in the Dutch/European techo scene and took initiative to re-release Game One on Nightvision last year and to include some very fine remixes by top producers around the world.

On part one we find Orlando himself doing a slow take with a deep monunumental ending which gives me goosebumps. Quantec delivers a washed out dub version wich is properly dripping with waves of white noice and subtle drums to drive it.

On to part two Steve Rachmad’s delivers a tight, stripped back reshape which works well with the original track’s insistent chords. Pacou delivers a minimal dubby take with a brilliant glitchy patchwork and some TB303 thrown in for good luck.

Essential download!
